Bjørn Staal, also known as nonfigurativ, is a Norwegian artist, programmer, and researcher whose work explores the dynamic interactions between digital systems and human perception and behavior. With more than a decade of experience in multidisciplinary design and software development, Staal co-founded the experimental art and design studioVoid in 2015. Focused mainly on the development of large-scale interactive installations,Void has gained international recognition for its work at the intersection of design, architecture, technology, and art. Since leaving the studio in 2023, Bjørn has focused on his own artistic practice, exploring how algorithms can enrich our understanding of what it means to be human in an age where more and more of our agency is being outsourced to tech companies. Staal’s work has been exhibited internationally, as part of online and physical exhibitions as well as installations in public spaces. In September 2024, Staal had his first solo exhibition at Wintercircus in Ghent, Belgium.
Losing Oneself is a series of generative plotter drawings developed specifically for Cure3. Through a set of algorithmically generated psycho-geographic maps, the series explores the tension between the chaotic nature of reality and our simultaneous grasping for control. We plan our lives, weaving intricate, fictitious structures that we try to inhabit, only to get repeatedly blindsided by chance, disorder, degeneration, and eventual disintegration. Drawing on inspiration from scientific diagrams, urban plans and neuronal mappings, the underlying algorithm produces a set of 200 randomly generated but distinct visual poems.
